ABOUT OUR FASTING PROGRAM



Fasting is not a deprivation but exactly the opposite: a very rich thing you do for your Self. Just as savasana on the mat; this is where the magic happens.

Rest from food, noise, phones, TV and newspapers. Fast from make-up and let yourself just be your perfect self. In fall and winter: warm yourself with stone massage, mineral baths, and warming teas. In Spring and Summer: cool yourself in our beautiful pool and upon the most beautiful beaches in the world. Nourish yourself deeply with yoga and delicious juices. Meditate as you paint, draw, write, knit, crochet, or scrapbook or just rest in the company of women. You will leave with a brand new creation and a brand new "Self." All your own creation.

Purify, cleanse, detoxify and, oh yeah, lose weight. It's amazing how the part about losing weight may be the reason some of us may participate in a fast, or begin yoga initially, but quickly this becomes just a bonus: just one of many happy side effects.. Try a Five day retreat focusing on the inner, centered place we come to know as we fast, practice yoga, resting and healing our psyches, bodies and souls from the physical, visual and audio "noise" and toxins that we absorb in our everyday American life. We "fast" on freshly juiced nutrient dense fruits, vegetables and potassium broth and optional grains. This program is perfect for those wishing to complete a longer fast but do not wish to take that amount of time off from their lives and responsibilities. PART ONE: An Expert Co-Pilate for Takeoff

3 to 5 days are spent in our classic Raw Juice or Master Cleanse Retreat in residence, completely guided. If you are a first time Faster, we recommend 5 days, if you have an biannual practice of juice fasting and cleansing, then 3 days is enough.

During your time you will:
  1. Enjoy your juices and broths prepared and served to you
  2. Daily yoga and meditation to shift you into fasting mode.
  3. Special workshop that will show you how to prepare you own juices, broth or master cleanse at home .
  4. Take a trip to our excellent health food store where you can buy your supplies to take home.
PART TWO: Autopilot

You return home with:
  1. one day's worth of frozen juices and fresh potassium broth and teas.
  2. directions and recipes for juicing (we can sell you a juicer if you want the one we use here)
  3. a plan for where you will find your juices in your home/work area, names of juice bars, yoga studios, colon hydrotherapists, recommendations for colon cleansing.
  4. E-mail check in's every 3 days
PART THREE: Safe Landing

Return "home" to American Yogini for guided break fast
It will take half the number of days you actually fasted to complete a re-entry into the world of eating and now is the time to plan for new ways of eating. We hope you will learn to eat intuitively, eating only what you want when you want. After fast miracle: you will likely find you no longer what you wanted before the fast. Cake could lose its allure and suddenly light healthy fresh foods will be your most fervent desire!

ABOUT OUR JUICES, BROTHS & GRAINS



Raw Juice
Raw Juice refers to the extracted juices of fruits and vegetables that have in no way been cooked or heated. This is to retain the full enzymatic properties. Please read about "what are enzymes".

We combine the juices at American Yogini in a very special way. Because our groups are either private or in small groups, we have the luxury of taking the time to combine the juices by hand individually with a result that could only happen in small handmade batches. We have the most delicious, nutritious, cleansing and lovingly made juices anywhere on the planet. Our freshly extracted juice blends maximize nutrients. Did you know that all Fruits and Vegetables contain protein? These are not complete proteins as animal products contain, but when combined in our special blends, a full array of nutrients, enzymes and proteins are made available to you.

Some ingredients we use in proprietary combinations are:

  • Kale
  • collards
  • green apples
  • lemon
  • lime
  • beets
  • carrots
  • organic red grapes
  • grapefruit
  • spirulina
  • ginger
  • cayenne
  • basil
  • cilantro
  • parsley
  • fresh oregano
The workshops we lead during your juice fast answer many questions and illuminate you further on the qualities and benefits of all these ingredients and teach you how you can make these juices yourself at home.

Potassium Broth
We have a broth available twice a day that is made from slow cooking potassium rich vegetables in purified water and straining out all the solid fiber. It is important to keep have a supply of potassium, which is also known as an electrolyte. The normal functioning of our bodies cells, inside and outside depend on regulating potassium. So regulating potassium with this broth may be very helpful to the cells as they are detoxing and rebuilding themselves.

Grains
We have simple steamed quinoa or millet available for the following purposes during your fast:
  • To slow down the detox if it is too uncomfortable to handle
  • To practice conscious chewing, if that is a focus for you
  • To ground you if you feel spacey
ABOUT COLON CLEANSING



Importance of Colon Cleansing
As you fast you will quickly notice that your normal elimination will stop. This is a normal "healthy" reaction to the fact that
  1. you are not chewing solid food – chewing motion is what begins the contractions of the colon that stimulate elimination—and
  2. you will be consuming no fiber – the "broom" that sweeps the contents of the colon out of the body through peristalsis, or the involuntary contractions of the colon that would be normal were you chewing.
Therefore it is "normal" that you are not having bowel movements, but eliminating the toxic waste that is in the bowels is a must. So how can we do this? With a little help and some pure clean water. Just as you shower and wash your outer body, so can you give your colon an inner bath with either colon hydrotherapy or with enemas. Much of the discomfort that results from your detox is a direct response to the re-absorption of toxins through the colon which will occur if the colon is not eliminating as it would were you eating fibrous solid healthy food. Many of us who do not eat healthy fibrous raw foods, and consume processed foods do not have normal elimination and that is what the fasting process can help correct. This may seem counter to the process, but believe me, eating "real" food after your fast is what will create a normal healthy elimination after every single time you chew and eat. Enemas and colonics will not create a dependence upon this practice. It is poor quality foods we eat and addiction to laxatives that cause an unhealthy, sluggish colon with poor eliminative action.

Symptoms you can relieve instantly with colon cleansing:
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Skin Rashes
  • Irritability
  • Anger
Colon Cleansing Options
Colon cleansing is essential, but everyone has their own preference as to how to accomplish this. So I suggest that you Choose ONLY ONE of the following techniques that you feel the most comfortable with. But please, do something to help your colon clear and hydrate itself! I have listed the options in the order of quality and effectiveness for your fast.
Colonics
A colonic is an inner bath for you colon that is administered by a professional. At the bottom of this section there is a link to resource site where you can find one in your area, and learn more about this wonderful healing arts modality. Colon Hydrotherapy is the ideal solution for colon cleansing during a juice fast, if you happen to have a trained colon hydrotherapist near to where you live. Find a therapist who will use only plain filtered water and a gentle gravity system. The reason I recommend gravity system and only water for fasting time, is that we want to do LESS not more. It is about taking away content and effort and letting the body do it’s thing with as little interference as possible. An inner bath with clean clear water with only gravity moving it along is gentle and perfect for fasting time. Being gentle and minimal is key to everything you do during a fast.

When finding a colon hydrotherapist, some will recommend daily sessions, but for most, one colonic for every 3 days of fasting is plenty. One colonic is like having several enemas.
  1. 1. totally disposable speculum AND tubing
  2. gravity system
  3. plain filtered water with no additives for most cases during a fast – probiotics are not needed now, after the fast we will learn more about that. Enemas
This is the most practical, economical, and very effective option for most people, no matter where you live. Use a good quality enema bag such as the one found in our fasting basics kit in our online store, or you may already have one of these. They are easily found in most drug stores. Follow the directions and illustrations that are on the box.
Tips for Taking an Enema:
  • Take time to put the tubing together properly as directed on the package - the main thing is the make sure the valve is attached in the correct direction BEFORE the tube is attached to the bag.
  • practice with the valve before attempting an enema.
  • Use room temperature or lightly warm water ( can feel comfortable streaming on your wrist).
  • The best advice is to be comfortable, so set up a comfortable stack of towels on the floor near your toilet where you can lie down.
  • Then make sure there is a door knob or a picture hook on the wall nearest you where the bag can be hung once filled.
  • Put on nice relaxing music and keep the lighting low or use candle light to aid relaxation and not feel rushed.
  • Let a small amount of water to flow in the first time and then release into the toilet before allowing greater quantity of water in. you can do that a couple of times.
  • Just keep letting water in, massage belly while holding if it is not uncomfortable to do so and release into toilet repeatedly until one , 1 liter bag has been used. It is an "inner bath" remember.
You can do this every day safely and with wonderful enhancing benefits for your detox and cleansing fast.

Supplements
Supplements of any kind are not recommended during a detox cleansing fast since during a juice fast, and as a matter of routine hopefully you will be re-learning to eat in such a way that you will eliminate naturally every time you eat. But if you are not in that category, and still do not want to do enemas or colonics, then you may wish to use one of the many colon cleansing products.

Dr. Schultz makes a line of good quality products. Or you may already be using a product you feel comfortable with. During a juice fast you only need to have one or two really good eliminations, so keep this method to a minimum, just enough to relieve your detox symptoms. You will not be able to eliminate daily, unless you are chewing more grains in the mornings and evenings. I do not consider this an ideal option during fasting since the idea is to do less, and pure water is as minimal as you can get, but perhaps for some, it is the most comfortable option. If you suffer from IBS, Crohnes Disease, diarrhea, or loose stools in anyway, supplements for colon cleansing are NOT the solution for you at this time! Please consider a licensed professional colon hydrotherapist if you are in this category or check with your doctor.
