We all have heard to lather up with your sunscreen when in the sun and for years I questioned that. What is in this chemical sunscreen and how does the new nanotechnology affect our body / skin? What toxins are lurking in these widely used sunscreens? Is there a healthy sunscreen alternative?
Recently in the news there has been a lot of talk about sunscreen danger and the possibility of cancers increasing due to chemically laden sunscreen and their free radical properties. The FDA has done research about Vitamin A in many brands of sunscreen and how it can accelerate development of skin tumors and lesions.
Even more treacherous is that many of the sunscreens include chemicals that have a strong estrogenic action. What this means to us, is problems in sexual development, adult sexual function & increased cancer risk.
As if this doesn’t send you looking to find a better alternative to sunscreen use, the estrogen stores in our fat tissues and can increase our fat storage, which as we know takes us longer to lose weight.
During a juice cleanse and detox toxins are flushed from our bodies and we do not want to add any more chemicals than what we come into contact with in our everyday lives.
Chemicals To Avoid When Choosing A Sunscreen
I’ve included a list of the chemicals that you should avoid which are found most often in mainstream sunscreens:
PABA and PABA esters (ethyl dihydroxy propyl PAB, glyceryl PABA, p-aminobenzoic acid, padimate-O or octyl dimethyl PABA)
Cinnamates (cinoxate, ethylhexyl p-methoxycinnamate, octocrylene, octyl methoxycinnamate)
Benzophenones (dixoybenzone, oxybenzone)
Salicylates (ethylhexyl salicylate, homosalate, octyl salicylate)
Digalloyl trioleate
Menthyl anthranilate
Avobenzone [butyl-methyoxydibenzoylmethane; Parsol 1789] (In European Sunscreens)
A good resource is the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and they have done some interesting research. They provide you with a 2010 Sunscreen Guide plus a checklist to help you protect yourself and your family from UV radiation skin damage.

Have you heard of Nanoparticles in Sunscreen?
Most recently, there is talk about the use by sunscreen manufacturers of nanosized particles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. These show the potential of causing serious human and environmental harm.
Some of these dangers listed include: Damage to human colon cells, damage to brain stem cells in mice, can penetrate healthy adult skin reaching the bloodstream, can travel up the food chain from smaller to larger organisms, damage important microbes in the environment and travel to mother’s unborn fetuses.
Are the alarms going off in your head, mine sure are. Please be sure to read the full article at AOL News:
